Violence Doesn’t Have Boundaries. Why Should Prevention?

The Virtuous Ecosystem (VE) was conceived as a coalition of Chicago-based nonprofit organizations—primarily on the South and West Sides—working together to reduce violence and create pathways to stability, opportunity, and community reintegration.

The Opportunity

Many organizations are doing important work, but often in isolation. Individuals living at the highest risk of violence, incarceration, retaliation, or chronic instability frequently moved between systems without receiving the coordinated support needed to achieve lasting change. Funders are investing in programs, but the ecosystem itself lacks alignment, shared learning, and a common framework for action.

The Journey

The VE evolved from a collection of independent organizations into a growing collaborative committed to addressing the root causes of violence through coordinated action.

The coalition's work now centers on::

  • Stabilization and crisis intervention

  • Job training and workforce pathways

  • Peace education

  • Community engagement

  • Reintegration support

  • Credible messenger leadership

  • Development of "peace entrepreneurs" who model positive alternatives for young people

Most importantly, The VE is demonstrating that collaboration itself can become a strategic asset. By creating stronger connections among organizations, leaders, and communities, the coalition is building the social infrastructure necessary to support long-term change.

What distinguishes this work is a shared belief that sustainable transformation happens not through isolated programs, but through relationships, trust, and a community of organizations working toward a common purpose.

The Progress

GREEN::HOUSE convened the founding leaders of Chicago-based nonprofits committed to ending gun violence and facilitated conversations that would ultimately shape the coalition behind the Virtuous Ecosystem. Early participants included leaders from organizations such as:

  • Auston Helping Hands

  • Neighborhood Working for Peace

  • Jehovah Jireh

  • Inciple

  • Engagement Through Empowerment

  • Pride ROC

Together, the group established shared norms and operating principles grounded in trust, transparency, empathy, accountability, and mutual respect. The conversations emphasized that the work was not simply about programs, but about leadership, relationships, and creating a culture capable of sustaining collaboration.

We also helped articulate the coalition's purpose, theory of change, governance approach, conflict-resolution process, and collective identity—including development of the Virtuous Ecosystem name, brand, messaging, and the dove logo featuring the tagline::

"Little by little the bird makes its nest."
