Monuments to Movements:: Giving Form to Collective Change

Periods of disruption have a way of sharpening our perspective.

During the pandemic, many people found themselves reconsidering not only how they lived, but also the stories that shape our understanding of who we are and how we got here. As communities across the world grappled with questions of identity, equity, memory and belonging, a deeper question emerged:

Whose stories do we choose to commemorate?

Public monuments have long celebrated individuals—leaders, visionaries, inventors and heroes. Yet many of society's most transformative achievements were not the work of a single person. They were the result of movements: collective acts of courage, sacrifice and persistence carried forward by countless individuals working toward a common cause.

It was from this insight that Monuments to Movements (M2M) was born.

Founded by cultural leaders Jane Saks and Neysa Page-Lieberman, M2M was created to explore how public art can illuminate the social movements that have shaped our communities, our institutions and our shared future. Through large-scale artistic interventions, exhibitions and public engagement, the organization seeks to expand the ways we remember, interpret and celebrate collective action.

As the founders prepared to launch the organization, they partnered with GREEN::HOUSE to transform a compelling idea into a strategic platform for growth and impact.

Working closely with the founding team, GREEN::HOUSE helped clarify the organization's core purpose, articulate its theory of change and develop a comprehensive launch strategy that aligned mission, messaging and execution. Together, we established a strategic framework that included organizational positioning, audience development, communications priorities, measurable objectives and a roadmap for long-term growth.

By identifying the deeper social and cultural need M2M was uniquely positioned to address, we helped create a clearer narrative capable of engaging artists, institutions, funders and communities around a shared vision.

The result was a stronger organizational foundation and a more compelling platform from which to launch an ambitious international initiative dedicated to elevating the stories of collective change.

Reflecting on the experience, the founders noted:

"One of the most unique and powerful elements of the GREEN::HOUSE process is their ability to hear what you're not saying. Guiding the launch of our new international public art organization, GREEN::HOUSE strategically honed in on our foundational mission to give voice to our goals and aspirations. By helping us get to the core of our mission, we were better positioned to amplify our message, reach the intended audience and authentically impact our field."

At its heart, Monuments to Movements is about more than public art.

It is about expanding our collective memory.

It is about recognizing that lasting change is rarely the work of a single individual.

And it is about ensuring that the movements that shape history are remembered with the same permanence as the people whose names often dominate it. ::

Central to the engagement was helping the founders move beyond describing what the organization would do and toward articulating why it mattered.
